Unlocking the Power of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga: A Journey to Strength and Serenity

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga: A Journey to Strength and Serenity

In the dynamic world of yoga, Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga stands out as a transformative practice that seamlessly intertwines breath with movement, fostering a deep connection between mind and body. As a yoga teacher and dedicated practitioner of Ashtanga Yoga — thanks to the several years spent in Mysore — I have had the opportunity to witness firsthand its ability to catalyse profound changes in those who practice this discipline. In this article, we will begin to explore the essence of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, its principles, benefits, and the transformative journey it offers to those who embrace its teachings.

Note: Mysore, the birthplace of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, has seen a continuous increase in the number of practitioners over the years. There, as per tradition, practice is daily and widespread, to the point that it is common to meet someone at breakfast and be asked: “How was your practice today?”

Understanding Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga:

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a dynamic and physically demanding practice that follows a predefined sequence of postures. The term “Vinyasa” can be translated as “movement synchronized with the breath,” emphasizing the union of the two as one moves from one posture to the next. This synchronized breathing work not only enhances the fluidity of movement but also cultivates a meditative state, guiding practitioners towards a deeper awareness of the present moment.

As one deepens their practice over time, a richer understanding of many of its aspects is attained. For instance, the term “vinyasa.” While it is true that breath and movement are synchronized, it is equally true that it is the breath that produces the movement: it is the movement that must adapt to the breath, not the other way around. In other words, the breath should strive to remain long and constant (Ujjayi pranayama) throughout the practice, not changing depending on the postures.

…well, at least this is a goal to strive for to the best of our abilities…

The Origins of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga:

The Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga system finds at its core the Yoga Korunta, a mysterious and ancient text that serves as the blueprint for the dynamic series of postures, breath work, and movement sequences that characterize Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga.

The origin of the Yoga Korunta is shrouded in legend and speculation. Legend has it that Sri T. Krishnamacharya stumbled upon the ancient text of Yoga Korunta during his travels through the remote forests of India. Immersing himself in its teachings, he is said to have decoded its intricate practices and integrated them into his own unique system of yoga. However, there is scant historical evidence to support this narrative, leading some to believe that the Yoga Korunta may be more of a mythological than a literal text.

Regardless of its historical authenticity, the teachings encapsulated within the Yoga Korunta were imparted by Sri T. Krishnamacharya to his students, such as Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and B.K.S. Iyengar, and have profoundly influenced the practice of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga.

This innovative approach developed and popularized by the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois breathed new life into the ancient practice, making it accessible to a wider audience and setting the stage for the global yoga phenomenon that swept across the world.

The Structure of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga:

At the heart of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga lies the Primary Series, also known as Yoga Chikitsa, which translates to “Yoga Therapy.” This foundational sequence comprises a set series of asanas that systematically purify and strengthen the body, detoxifying internal organs, and restoring balance to the nervous system. With regular practice, students progress through the series at their own pace, gradually advancing to more challenging poses under the guidance of a qualified teacher.

Following the Primary Series, having achieved a certain degree of mastery, the practitioner continues to the Intermediate Series (Nadi Shodhana), and four Advanced Series (Sthira Bhaga A-B-C-D), each designed to purify and strengthen different aspects of the body and mind. Practitioners are encouraged to approach the practice with dedication, patience, and humility, understanding that progress unfolds gradually over time and that the asana in itself is not the goal of one’s own practice.

The majority of practitioners center their yoga practice around the Primary and Intermediate Series. The third and fourth Series, A and B, are less commonly practiced due to their increased difficulty. The last two series are said to be reserved for dedicated yogis, where “yogi” carries a deeper significance beyond simply owning a Manduka mat.

As I write this, I’m integrating the third series, which I recently completed, and beginning to delve into the fourth. Personally, I haven’t encountered any practitioners who include the final two Series, C and D, in their practice routines.

Benefits Beyond the Physical:

While Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga undeniably offers a multitude of physical benefits, including increased strength, flexibility, and stamina, its transformative power extends far beyond the realm of the physical. The synchronized breathwork and dynamic movement sequences serve as a potent catalyst for mental and emotional well-being. Through mindful awareness and focused concentration, practitioners learn to quiet the fluctuations of the mind, cultivating a sense of inner calm and resilience in the face of life’s challenges.

Although Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga undoubtedly offers a multitude of physical benefits, including increased strength, flexibility, and endurance, its transformative power extends far beyond the physical realm. The synchronized breathing work and dynamic movement sequences act as a powerful catalyst for mental and emotional well-being. Through awareness and focused concentration, practitioners learn to quiet the fluctuations of the mind, cultivating a sense of inner calm and resilience in the face of life’s challenges.

… I am often asked, “Why do you practice every day?”
“Because it helps me feel good with myself and it helps me feel good with others.”

In addition, the disciplined nature of Ashtanga Vinyasa fosters self-discipline, perseverance, and a profound sense of self-awareness. As students navigate the ebb and flow of their practice, they develop a deeper understanding of their bodies, their limits, and their potential for growth. This heightened self-awareness goes beyond the mat, permeating every aspect of their lives, leading to greater clarity, purpose, and authenticity.

My daily practice comes from an act of self-love, and this should be the essence of self-discipline: not punishment, but doing what is right for yourself… Come on, you know that the third slice of cake isn’t good for you 😉

The Transformative Journey:

Embarking the journey of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is like embarking on a profound odyssey of self-discovery and transformation. It requires dedication, commitment, and the willingness to face the discomfort that inevitably arises along the way. However, within this crucible of challenges and growth lies the alchemy of personal transformation.

As practitioners navigate the physical challenges of the practice, they simultaneously confront the inner obstacles that hinder their growth – whether they be limiting beliefs, fears, or emotional baggage. With each breath and each asana, they learn to release these obstacles, cultivating a sense of spaciousness within themselves and reclaiming their innate vitality and joy.

“My journey with Yoga started earlier. Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, however, came much later, I would say in 2011, the year when, leaving behind my previous life as an engineer, I became fully dedicated to yoga, which has since become the core of my life. Approaching Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga as an adult means dealing with the accumulation from the life lived before, physically, emotionally, and mentally… I know I’m not the only one; that’s why I’ll be talking about this aspect in another post soon…”

Conclusions:

As a practitioner first, and a yoga teacher later, especially after spending years in Mysore, I’ve been privileged to observe the profound effects of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga on numerous individuals (myself included). Through the integration of breath, movement, and meditation, this method offers a path to holistic well-being, nourishing the body, mind, and spirit.

That being said, I’m not claiming that this is the only possible path or that it’s the best for everyone. However, if you feel any affinity with this method, whether you are an experienced practitioner or a curious beginner, I encourage you to explore the transformative power of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga and embark on your personal journey of self-discovery and liberation.
