What Is Ashtanga Grammar?
It is a method for understanding the practice of Ashtanga Yoga through three fundamental elements: Alignment, Intention, and Expression.
Ashtanga Grammar offers a lens through which to observe the practice and discover its different possibilities for expression. It does not replace traditional practice; it provides tools to engage with it more deeply.
The Three Elements
Alignment – What Is Transmitted
The starting point: how the tradition structures what it transmits, whether a posture, a pranayama technique, or a text and its commentary.
Intention – The Why
Understanding what you are doing, why you are doing it, and what direction you want to give your practice.
Expression – Your Way of Living It
Bringing what you have understood into your practice, developing a personal approach without losing the essence of the teaching you have received.
A Grammar to Read Your Practice
Alignment and Intention can change order depending on what you are studying; Expression emerges from integrating them with your own uniqueness. For example, knowing how and why to modify an asana when needed. The same approach applies to the entire practice.
Ashtanga Grammar helps you develop the tools of discernment (viveka) needed to understand what you receive, relate it to your own experience, and gradually make it your own.
The Tools of Ashtanga Grammar
Different areas of practice call for different tools.
Asana: Anatomy and kinamstics help you understand the body and movement.
Pranayama: Western anatomy and traditional yogic models help you understand the technique; observing posture, breath, and emotion allows you to test it against your own experience.
Philosophy: Tibetan debate provides tools for analysis and logical reasoning to study texts such as the Yoga Sutras and distinguish between what is said, the meaning we attribute to it, and how to apply it.
What You Gain
You learn to observe, understand, question, and progress while respecting the teaching you have received and the tradition that transmits it. Your practice evolves alongside your experience, your body, and the different stages of life.
